PTL provides particle size and characterization analyses on many materials in the petrochemical industry, including gasoline, oil, lubricants, distillates, alternative fuels, and other products.

Some examples include catalysts, which are used in the oil and gas industry to either remove harmful emissions or capture different desirable components from petroleum through refining. By determining the surface area, pore size distribution, and particle size of the catalyst, researchers can determine its effectiveness and whether or not the catalyst needs to be replenished.

Particles in oil can reduce lubrication effectiveness and result in product failure. If the size and shape of the wear particles is determined, filtration equipment can be engineered to remove the contamination and increase oil and product life. Images from a Scanning Electron Microscope can illustrate contaminant particles, allowing engineers to determine the point source of the contamination or wearing parts before failure occurs.

Examples of petrochemical, oil and gas materials we have analyzed include:

  • Bisphenol-A
  • Brake Fluid
  • Diesel fuel
  • Ethanol
  • Ethylene glycol
  • Fracking sand
  • Fuel oil
  • Gas, oil and lubricants
  • Nylons
  • Organic hydrocarbons
  • Polyamides
  • Polypropylene
  • Polyurethane
  • Purified terephthalic acid
  • Spent engine oil
  • Terephthalic acid
This is only a small representation of the particle materials we have analyzed for the petrochemical, oil and gas industry.
